Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a form of psychotherapy aimed at helping one notice and change unhealthy thinking styles, feelings, and behaviours that contribute to one’s difficulties. CBT is based on the two central ideas: (1) our thoughts influence our emotions and behaviour, and how we behave can significantly affect our thought patterns and emotions.
Extensive research indicates that CBT is an effective treatment for many mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and stress. CBT is a more structured and practical type of talk-therapy that typically requires fewer sessions than other therapeutic approaches. Over the course of therapy, one will learn strategies to acknowledge and challenge unhelpful thoughts that cause distress and get in the way of daily life. Sessions also include learning relaxation and self-soothing strategies to help manage difficult or overwhelming emotions and/or bodily sensations.
